Dr. Stadelman is survived by his sister, Betty, living in Anchorage, Alaska, his wife of 65 years, Margy, and his son and daughter. His family also includes 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchilden. Memorial services to celebrate Bill's life are planned for Saturday, January 12 at 1 p.m. at Wesley Manor, 1555 Main St, Frankfort, IN and, Sunday, January 13 at 1 p.m. at the East Faculty Lounge in the Memorial Union on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus. The family has requested no flowers please and that in-memoriam gifts can be sent to support the Stadelman Endowment in Food Science, a graduate scholarship fund established by Dr. Stadelman in 2004. Dr. William J. Stadelman passed away at 2:00 A.M. Saturday, November 24. "Bill" celebrated his 90th birthday this past August. He was residing at the Wesley Manor in Frankfort, Indiana. A native of Orchards, Washington, Bill received a bachelor's degree from Washington State University in 1940. He received his Masters of Science Degree at Penn State University in 1942. Following WWII, Bill returned to Penn State University, receiving his Ph.D. Degree in 1948. He served in the United States Navy from 1942-1946, seeing action in the Atlantic theater and achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant. He remained in the Naval Reserve until 1967, retiring with the rank of Captain.
Dr. Stadelman taught at Washington State University until he joined the faculty of the Poultry Science Department at Purdue University in 1955. He taught poultry science, animal science, and food science courses there until his retirement in 1983. Following retirement, Dr. Stadelman was Professor Emeritus, keeping active as a consultant to the poultry industry and in the Institute of Food Technologists, his professional organization. He authored or co-authored more than 230 refereed publications, 133 abstracts, two textbooks, and numerous book chapters. He also held patents for a deviled egg process and an aerosol spray for egg preservation.
Dr. Stadelman is known to many as the "father of poultry products technology" because many of his students have emerged as leaders in industry, government, and academic poultry programs. Frank Perdue of Perdue Farms Inc., says, "I have known Bill for many years and have always regarded him as a top expert in the field of poultry product technology". Dr. Stadelman's 50-year academic career played a major role in the science-based evolution of the U.S. poultry industry and contributed greatly to the phenomenal rise in worldwide poultry meat consumption during the past two decades.
Dr. Stadelman received many honors, including election to the American Poultry Hall of Fame, selection as invited speaker at the 1990 International Egg Commission Meeting, the Ralston Purina Teaching Award from the Poultry Science Association, the Food Scientist of the Year award from the Philadelphia section of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), and president of Phi Tau Sigma international food science honorary society. He was also honored as a fellow by the Poultry Science Association, the Institute of Food Technologists, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was listed in “Who’s Who in America”.
In 2000, Dr. Stadelman was recognized by Penn State University with an Outstanding Alumnus Award by the College of Agriculture Sciences. The Department of Food Science at Purdue University recognized Bill’s career and gave him an Outstanding Food Science Award in its inaugural year. Bill also received a Sagamore of the Wabash award from the Governor of Indiana in 1988, the state’s highest civilian honor.
